We are worried about placing our family member in a Long Term Care Facility and we are feeling confused and guilty about doing so.

This is quite typical and many people feel this way when confronted with this very difficult decision. Rest assured, caring for the security of your beloved is a caring gesture.

Eventually, dangerous falls and other issues have to finally be recognized and addressed by the family or guardian. It's rather a daunting task for family members to care for an senior person and can be distracting from family, activities, children, and their occupations. This is also true if their cherished one also requires special needs and services. Often the responsibility is put on one relative who then suffers burnout. Usually the best solution is to place a family member in a safe and professional home style environment where care is focused on their needs 24 hours per day.

How do I know which kind of care facility to place my family member in?

There are three basic types:

Assisted Living Facilities are for people who are generally in most ways independent and who are fully cognizant but may need some assistance with everyday living activities. Assisted living is a desired place for elderly people who do not yet need an adult family home. They may be ambulatory and can easily walk to elevators, the lunchroom, and activities that are provided , nor need watching during sleep at night. They live as independently as is possible in an apartment setting. Assisted living facilities are often not licensed to provide nursing care.

Adult Family Homes or Personal Care Homes are for individuals who are forgetful, may fall, need help with remembering things, need need help with activities of daily living, need monitoring or guidance during the day and at night, or who need more intensive help and health care. When seniors require 24-hour specialized care and they're at risk for injuring themselves they should think about moving to an Adult Family Home which has both 24 hour professional licensed health care.

Nursing Homes are for seniors that require more advanced or specialized attention in which a typical Adult Family Home cannot usually provide. Someone who has been determined by a physician to truly have a condition that requires skilled medical facilities (i.e., these are a hazard to themselves or others or have a debilitating condition) would be a prospect for a nursing home.

How can I tell which level of assistance they require?

There are qualified assessors who are able to do an assessment for the average cost of $300. An evaluation is required for legal reasons to ascertain your loved one's treatment needs and create a treatment plan predicated on the diagnosis. You can contact us and we will give you information about how to contact our assessor.

Is it the responsibility of family to make doctor consultations, pick up and deliver medications, and transport, etc?

We are able to make doctor sessions and can help arrange the session with the family but the family would transport the resident or request transportation. That is standard for nearly all homes because of insurance limitations. We have a visiting home doctor who cares for the majority of the residents in the home. The resident may register with the home doctor if they choose.
